Impact of Meteorological Conditions on Expressway Operation in Anhui Province

In order to grasp the impact of disastrous weather on expressway operation in Anhui Province, the change characteristics of frequency, durations, time periods and grades of traffic control under different weather conditions were contrastively analyzed based on the regulatory information and meteorological observation data of expressway in Anhui from 2012 to 2016, and the spatial distributions of traffic control frequency were discussed. The results show that in traffic control of Anhui expressway caused by the weather, the traffic control frequency under fog weather condition accounted for 60.9%, and the grade of traffic control was higher. The fog weather was the most important disastrous weather affecting the expressway operation in Anhui Province, specially in autumn and winter. The sections of expressway along the Huaihe River and its northern regions, the Dabie Mountain areas and southern mountainous areas in Anhui had many traffic controls. The impact of rainfall on expressway traffic in Anhui was second, and it was greater in spring and summer. The rainy season from June to July was easily to cause traffic control in the Dabie Mountain areas and mountainous areas of southern Anhui for a long time, but the grade of traffic control was lower. Although the frequencies of traffic control under snow and road icing conditions was low, the influences on traffic were great in winter, so the traffic control level was high, and the traffic controls mostly occurred in northern Anhui Province and high altitude sections. In harvest periods of summer and autumn, the smoke generated by straw burning had a certain impact on road traffic in some sections along the Huaihe River and its northern regions. Moreover, the diurnal changes of traffic control frequency under fog, rain, snow, road icing and smoke weather conditions were obvious, and the frequency was high in the morning and low in the afternoon.
