Analysis of a Haze and Sand-dust Mixed Pollution Weather in Spring of Beijing

A haze and sand-dust mixed pollution event occurred in Beijing from March 26 to 31 in 2015. Based on the conventional meteorological observations, sounding data and the air quality data from Beijing environmental protection monitoring station, it was found that the mixed pollution event could be divided into four stages. In the first stage, Beijing area was in a weak convergence zone, and the atmospheric stratification was stable. The wind speed was small and the main weather phenomenon was haze. In the second stage, it was affected by the cyclone over Mongolia and the sand-dust occurred in Beijing. In the third stage, the sand-dust returned flow from the southern part of the North China and affected Beijing once again. In the fourth stage, dust weather gradually weakened and haze developed again. The simulation results of the HYSPLIT model show it was a typical mixed pollution weather caused by sand and dust backflow.
